The Story

Pommard house 1.jpg

The Pommard House dates back to the fourteenth century, the times of the Dukes of Burgundy, and was the residence of respected local winemaker Jean Michelot, whose family lived in Pommard since the 1600's.

It has been lovingly restored to enhance the ancient features, but has the latest amenities and conveniences for the comfort of guests.

It comprises a generous ground floor bedroom with 2 singles or king sized bed, comfortable sofa, and ensuite bathroom & laundry. The floor is paved with ancient flagstones. We have decorated with a large solid walnut wardrobe from the epoque of Louis XVI.

The first floor has open plan kitchen, living and dining, and features new gourmet kitchen, elegant dining, and comfortable lounge area with English/French TV and Bluetooth sound system.

Ascend the spiral oak staircase to the second bedroom on the top floor where you will find a king size bed, C17th Flemish oak wardrobe, spacious ensuite with luxury bath, and rooftop terrace where you can enjoy views over the vineyards with refreshments, bathed in afternoon light.

The Region

The Cote d'Or is a narrow strip of land about 60km long on a gentle rise facing the East, and is celebrated as the source of some of the worlds finest wines.

It is located in the region of Burgundy, about 300km south-east of Paris or 3hrs by car, towards the boarder with Italy, Switzerland & Germany.

The village of Pommard itself has a population of around 600, and is home to more than 50 winery domaines. It was highly favoured by Thomas Jefferson a few years before the French Revolution in the 1780's when Jefferson was sent to France by George Washington as emissary for a new nation, America.

Jefferson wrote fondly for years of a Pommard wine, from the 'Clos de la Commaraine'. The Pommard House overlooks this vineyard.

The main commercial centre in the area is the medieval town of Beaune, which is just 3km away. A pleasant stroll through the vineyards, or 5 minutes by car.

Stroll or cycle through the vineyards, the trails are easy through the gentle terrain and are well marked along the Route des Grands Crus which meanders through all of the principal wine villages of the Cote d'Or.

There are numerous picturesque villages, chateaux and natural attractions within an hour of Pommard, not to mention the mind numbing array of wines and gourmet food opportunities on your doorstep.
